Rare Book Week talk at the MCG Library

Posted on 12 Aug at 12:17 pm

It was such a pleasure to be on a panel at the MCC Library for Rare Book Week last Wednesday 29 July and talk all about my books and sports research! Loved listening to @kasey_writes chat about her exploration of netball history and the focused research into the South African and Australian game in the 1970s. Great questions from Trevor Ruddell, with one of my favourites being about the treasures I’ve found while researching.
One I mentioned was the story of a female weightlifter in the 1870s. Could you imagine what her career would have been like in a time when women were seen as wives and mothers rather than individuals? Another was of Frederick Ironside, a story also from the 1870s, who was an ally of women in sports who attempted to create a game where men and women could play together.
Pictured are the three panellists in those super comfy chairs; the wonderful book DELIVERY: THE BEST OF THE YORKER; and the latest THE YORKER magazine (featuring some information about BOWL THE MAIDENS OVER and the BARBARA RAE STATUE) that I was gifted by Trevor and the MCC Library.
Was such a great event! Thanks for having me.
Thank you Lynda Carroll for the event photos.
